Perception Meaning and Features: “Perception is the act of selecting, receiving, organising, and interpreting information from the outside world in order to make it meaningful to you.” “Decisions and actions are the outcome of this influx of significant knowledge.”

The following are a few definitions of perception provided by various authors:

“Perception may be described as the organisation and interpretation of sensory experiences by people in order to provide meaning to their surroundings.”

“Perception covers all those mechanisms through which a person acquires information about his surroundings seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling,” according to Joseph Reitz. The study of these continual processes reveals that three types of factors influence their functioning: the objects or events being seen, the environment in which perception happens, and the person performing the perceiving.”

To put it another way, perception is the act of perceiving what is there to view. However, the perceiver, the item, and its surroundings all have an impact on what is perceived. All three of these elements are emphasised by the notion of perception.

(I) Perception is critical to comprehending human behaviour since everyone sees the world and addresses life situations differently—what we see or feel is not always the same as what is really happening. It’s because what we hear isn’t always what was spoken, but what we think was stated. We purchase something because we believe it to be the greatest, not because it is the best. As a result of perspective, we may learn why one person finds a job gratifying while another does not.

(ii) If individuals act based on their perceptions, we can forecast how they will act in other situations by studying their current perceptions of the world. One person’s interpretation of the facts may vary from another’s interpretation of the facts.

(iii) Because individuals’s perception is impacted by their needs, the requirements of diverse persons may be identified using perception. They distort the reality in connection to their tensions, much like the mirrors at an amusement park.

(iv) For a manager who wishes to avoid making mistakes while dealing with people and situations in the workplace, perception is critical. The fact that various individuals interpret the same circumstance differently adds to the complexity of the issue. Managers must have a thorough understanding of their employees’ perspectives in order to successfully interact with them.

Thus, understanding human behaviour requires a knowledge of their perception, or how they see various events. People’s actions are determined by their views of reality, not by reality itself. The world as it is viewed is the world that is crucial in comprehending human behaviour.
